China Garlic Export To Brasil And Brasil Garlic Market Analysis

Jan 30, 2024

According to reports, Brazilian chefs and diners may not have noticed that the fresh garlic in Brazilian market are mostly China garlic. Last year, Brazil's garlic imports from China increased by 47%, and currently one-third of the garlic in the market are China garlic.
Since 2000, Brazil has been importing a large amount of garlic from China. Last year alone, Brazil imported nearly 100000 tons of Shandong garlic in China.
With Brazil importing a large amount of garlic from China, the position of garlic in the foreign trade between the two countries is also increasing. According to data from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, Brazil was the 33rd largest garlic importer from China in 2015, and rose to 10th place last year. Nowadays, the amount of garlic imported to Brazil has exceeded the amount imported from China for air conditioning, lights, and computer control panels.
The reason why Brazil's garlic imports from China increased by nearly 50% last year is also due to the law against small and micro enterprises announced by the Brazilian Supreme Court last year. This way, Brazilian importers do not need to pay anti-dumping taxes on Chinese garlic, and the price of Chinese garlic is much cheaper.
With the implementation of this law, it is expected that Brazil's imports of garlic from China will continue to increase. "After the implementation of the law, the price of garlic per box in China is 50 koos, while the planned cost of locally produced garlic in Brazil is at least 80 koos," said Rafael Corsino, Chairman of the Brazilian Garlic Manufacturers Association.
But he admits that this measure is beneficial for Brazilian garlic importers, but it is a disaster for Brazilian garlic producers. "If we don't use anti-dumping measures, Brazilian garlic won't be able to compete with Chinese garlic," said Cosino. At present, Brazilian manufacturers are also actively taking action, hoping to increase taxes on Chinese products by classifying garlic heads.
