Senegal onions shortage cause the onion import quantity increase

Feb 04, 2024

Senegal is an important economic center in West Africa, and the port of Dakar is one of the busiest ports in Africa. Due to climate reasons, Senegal needs to import a large amount of garlic every year, and China is Senegal's largest garlic supplier. Not only garlic, Senegal also needs to import tens of thousands of tons of onions every year to cope with market shortages and suppress soaring prices. Among them, Dutch onions, Indian onions, and Chinese onions are more popular in the local area.

Onion shortage is a cyclical situation, and the government is taking measures to address it. This situation also involves other materials, including garlic, sugar, and rice. Last year, a sudden flood in India led to a reduction in rice production and a suspension of exports. The same goes for onions. Senegal's onion production has increased from 200000 tons in 2012 to 400000 tons now. The onion quantity "largely meets the demand, but still faces the problem of lacking agricultural production and storage infrastructure.".
