Philippine Garlic And Onions Seriously Relys On Import

Feb 04, 2024

According to Philippine media reports on the 25th, the latest data from the Plant Industry Bureau (BPI) of the Philippine Ministry of Agriculture shows that as of December 7th, the Philippines imported 86000 tons of garlic, 22000 tons of yellow onions, and 11000 tons of red onions in 2023, accounting for 51%, 71%, and 45% of approved imports, respectively.
According to data from the Philippine National Bureau of Statistics, garlic imports reached a record high of 102000 tons in 2022, while production was only 5885 tons (self-sufficiency rate of about 5.8%), the lowest level since 1990.
The Philippines suffered from an onion crisis from the end of last year to the beginning of this year. Like garlic, Philippine onions have been relying on imports in recent years to meet domestic demand. (End)
