Autumn is a good time to plant garlic, and the selection and treatment of garlic before planting are very important, so as to ensure the normal growth of garlic and improve the yield of garlic. So how to choose and deal with garlic?
1. Garlic seed selection
Before sowing, it is best to dry the garlic in the sun for 2-3 days to make the garlic petals loose, easy to break, and promote the germination of garlic seeds. After harvesting and drying, before warehousing and storage, farmers should select garlic. Garlic with large garlic, few and neat garlic petals, white color, hypertrophic terminal buds and no disease and injury should be selected as garlic seeds for separate storage. Select again before sowing to remove rotten, moth eaten and retting garlic to ensure excellent garlic planting.
2. Seperate garlic into cloves
Breaking garlic is to remove the heel, remove the broken garlic petals and peel the garlic skin. This is because the garlic skin and heel will affect the water absorption of garlic to varying degrees, thus affecting the normal excavation of seedlings. Therefore, the garlic skin and heel before sowing are conducive to the rooting of seedlings and the jumping of petals during emergence. If it is cultivated in saline alkali land, garlic skin and heel can be avoided in order to prevent the corrosion of alkali to garlic seeds.
3. Sowing by grade
The size of garlic seed has a great impact on the yield. The larger the mother valve, the more shaped the plant will grow, the larger the garlic will be formed, and the higher the yield will be. Therefore, when planting, farmers should not only choose the larger garlic, but also choose the larger garlic clove. After breaking the clove, it is divided into three levels: large, medium and small. When planting, select the first and second level garlic clove. The third level garlic clove should be sown according to the level because of its weak growth ability and low yield.
4. Garlic seed germination
When sowing in autumn, if the garlic seed of the year is used and does not pass the dormancy period, it is necessary to treat the garlic seed. Remove the heel without peeling the garlic seed, put it in a certain container, spray water and stir it to make the garlic skin wet, and sow it after 3 ~ 4 days. Or half a month before sowing, soak in the water after removing the heel, then put it into the cellar, spread it on the wetland, turn it every 3-4 days, so that the garlic seeds are evenly moistened, the temperature is controlled at about 11-16, and the air relative humidity is 83%. About half a month later, the seeds can be sown when white roots occur.
